Foreign Minister Sugiono has met with his United States counterpart, Marco Rubio, during his visit to Washington, where the two discussed various key issues including the latest developments in the Middle East and the South China Sea, as well as the ongoing US trade tariff negotiations.

Jakarta and Washington will continue to expand their strategic partnership in various sectors including political security, defense, trade and investments, official statements asserted.
Several Indonesian key domestic agendas, including food and energy security, downstreaming and human resources development were brought forward by Sugiono, while Rubio asserted the need for further collaboration to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
“Some of the [Indonesian] priorities have opened up avenues for concrete collaboration with the United States government,” a statement from the Indonesian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.
“[Sugiono] also pushed for the strengthening of the US-Indonesia economic partnership, including in the context of supply chain by inviting US investors to invest in the critical mineral sector, like nickel, as well as in other key sectors,” it continued.

Meanwhile, defense and security cooperation were among Washington’s main talking points during the meeting, an official statement from the US Department of State suggested, with Rubio highlighting the South China Sea and Iran’s role in the Middle East conflict.
