ndonesia has raised the alert status for the country’s embassy in Iran to the highest level and activated its plan to evacuate 386 of its citizens in the country via land crossings to nearby countries, following further escalation between Iran and Israel after Israel's surprise attack on Friday.
The situation in Iran has escalated to a point where the lives of civilians are threatened, Foreign Minister Sugiono said, while also calling for restraint and peaceful de-escalation. He added that this office had been preparing evacuation plans for Indonesians residing in Iran since issuing the highest alert level.
“We have also communicated with several of Iran’s neighbors to plead for their assistance during the evacuation process of our citizens, as the situation has been increasingly dire. We hope this tension can be resolved soon,” the minister said early on Thursday in Saint Petersburg, Russia, where he is accompanying President Prabowo Subianto for a state visit in the European country.
While stopping short of naming the neighboring countries, Sugiono went on to say that the evacuation would start on Thursday local time by land, as flights from Iran were “not possible during this time”.
In a post uploaded on Thursday on its social media accounts, the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran urged all Indonesian citizens in Iran to report to the embassy through its telephone and WhatsApp hotlines or the ministry’s platform.
It also advised the Indonesians to pack an emergency bag containing essential documents, cash, food, water and medicine for several days.
