ndonesia has warned that the cohesion and relevance of ASEAN are being challenged by the current global reality of power rivalries and rising protectionism, urging the 10-nation bloc to be more agile and expansive as the United States’ trade tariffs cast a heavy shadow over the region.
To prove itself worthy of regional relevance, ASEAN must be able to solve geo-economic and geopolitical issues “in tandem”, as they were “two sides of the same coin”, Foreign Minister Sugiono said on Wednesday at the plenary session of the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) in Kuala Lumpur.
“ASEAN’s credibility will be defined by the consensus of our values and the coherence of our actions,” Sugiono said.
The Malaysian capital is set for a busy week as the AMM and related meetings convene from July 8 to 11, where the top diplomats from Southeast Asia nations, including several hardest hit by US tariffs, are slated to talk about economic cooperation and internal peacekeeping amid troubling geopolitical trends.
