View all search resultsresident Prabowo Subianto will use his debut at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) this month to press for Palestinian statehood, the Foreign Ministry said, as it prepares for a flurry of meetings on the sidelines of the annual gathering.
Anticipation is mounting for what the government has marked as Prabowo’s final major foreign trip of the year. He is set to travel to New York some time in the next two weeks for the general debate that will start on Sept. 23 during the recently opened UNGA 80th session, marking the first time in more than a decade that an Indonesian president has addressed the forum.
More than 145 world leaders are expected to converge for the general debate this year, with discussions so far projected to largely revolve around hot-button issues such as reforms for the UN, climate change mitigation amid reduced funds and flailing international commitment as well as Israel’s unyielding military operation and starvation blockade in Palestine.
Prabowo has been scheduled to deliver a 15 minute speech on the opening day of the general debate, going third after Brazil and the United States.
"Several very high-priority items that will be brought up will include recent global dynamics, such as the recent air strikes made against Qatar, and the Palestinian issue,” Foreign Ministry’s multilateral cooperation director general Tri Tharyat told a press briefing on Thursday.

These issues will also be prioritized during Prabowo’s possible meetings with world leaders on the sidelines of the UN high-level week, he added. However, it remains unclear whether a meeting with US President Donald Trump is on the cards, Tri said.
