resident Prabowo Subianto will deliver a speech at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) next month, marking the first time in more than a decade that an Indonesian president has addressed the forum.
Prabowo will make his debut at the general debate, the annual gathering of heads of state and government during the weeklong UNGA session, in New York, the United States, on the first day of the debate on Sept. 23.
“[Prabowo] will be the third [speaker],” Presidential Communications Office (PCO) head Hasan Nasbi told reporters on Tuesday.
His address is expected to come after Brazil and the United States.
When asked about the content of Prabowo’s address, Hasan declined to provide details but urged Indonesians to tune in and watch the speech. Hasan also did not elaborate on Prabowo’s full schedule in the US, including whether or not he would have a meeting with President Donald Trump.
Prabowo’s appearance at the upcoming UNGA will be the first made by an Indonesian president in a decade, after Prabowo’s predecessor, Joko “Jokowi” Widodo skipped every in-person UNGA session in New York throughout his presidency.
Jokowi was always represented by other officials, most notably then-vice president Jusuf Kalla and then-foreign minister Retno LP Marsudi. His only appearance at the UN assembly was via pre-recorded video messages in 2020 and 2021, when most world leaders addressed the sessions also through pre-recorded speeches due to COVID-19-related travel restrictions.
