resident Prabowo Subianto has wrapped up his brief visit to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, during which he called for unity among Middle East countries amid rising tensions in the region following Israel’s attack on Qatari capital of Doha last week.
Israel launched missiles targeting Hamas leaders in Doha last Tuesday, in an unprecedented strike inside the territory of a key mediator in the Gaza ceasefire talks. The attack, which reportedly killed at least five Hamas members and a Qatari security officer, has since prompted international condemnation, including from the United States, Israel’s ally in its war with Hamas.
After arriving at Doha International Airport around 3 p.m. local time on Friday, Prabowo went straight to the Lusail Palace to meet Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.
In his two-hour meeting with the Qatari leader, Prabowo conveyed Indonesia’s sympathy for the victims of the attack and reaffirmed Jakarta’s support for Qatar’s sovereignty.
Prabowo also urged “a more active role from countries [in the Middle East] to protect geopolitical stability and prioritize international dialogue” on the heels of Israel’s attack, according to a press release from the Presidential Secretariat on Saturday.
