he Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo has urged all Indonesian nationals in Japan to remain calm but to remain vigilant after a 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck Aomori prefecture on Monday evening and triggered a tsunami warning.
The earthquake occurred at 11:15 p.m. local time with an epicenter around 80 kilometers off the east coast of Aomori in northern Japan at a depth of 50 km, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The powerful quake prompted orders for some 90,000 residents and triggered tsunami warnings as high as 3 m in the Aomori, Hokkaido and Iwate prefectures, with tsunamis ranging from 20 to 70 cm reported at several ports across the prefectures, Reuters reported.
However, as of early Tuesday morning, the warnings have been downgraded to tsunami advisories, which now cover Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures.
The earthquake stands at the “upper 6” level on Japan’s 1-7 seismic intensity scale, which characterizes it as strong enough to cause damage to buildings.
In a statement on Instagram on Tuesday shortly after the quake, the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo reminded Indonesian nationals in the surrounding area to remain calm and alert, noting the frequent occurrence of earthquakes in Japan.
“[We have] appealed to Indonesian citizens in Japan to keep monitoring the situation and follow instructions issued by official Japanese authorities,” the embassy further said in a press release on Tuesday.
