View all search resultsThe Foreign Ministry's new pick to serve as Indonesia's governor to the intergovernmental nonprofit indicates a growing focus on soft diplomacy in strengthening both bilateral and interregional ties.
ndonesia seeks to focus on strengthening cooperation with Europe through semiformal platforms and people-to-people exchanges in sectors such as climate action, education and cultural exchanges, with an envoy appointed as a member of the board of governors for the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF).
In a statement on Jan. 1, the Foreign Ministry announced the appointment of career diplomat Andri Hadi as Indonesia’s governor to ASEF. He succeeds Soemadi Brotodiningrat, a former ambassador to Japan and the United States who had served on the organization’s board of governors over several terms since 2009.
With nearly four decades of experience, Andri has previously served as the ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg as well as the European Union. He was also involved in negotiations on the Indonesia-EU Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA).
His appointment reflects Jakarta’s focus to push for cooperation on key challenges it shares with Europe outside rigid diplomatic channels.
“Asia-Europe cooperation is currently entering a new phase amid the global geopolitical dynamic and the development of new strategic issues emerging in the region,” the ministry said in its statement. “[These] will increasingly determine the world order: economic issues in climate change and green transition politics.”
ASEF is a nonprofit intergovernmental organization based in Singapore. It was established in 1997 under the Asia-Europe Meeting to promote cooperation and dialogue between policymakers, academics, youth leaders and other actors through less formal platforms.
The group has worked with over 190 partner organizations across the two regions in more than 260 projects such as conferences and seminars to explore thematic areas including education, culture, governance and media.
