T

he Indonesian Navy officially received the KRI Canopus hydro-oceanography ship during a ceremony at German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen in Lemwerder, Germany, on Thursday.

Deputy Navy chief of staff Vice Adm. Erwin S. Aldedharma led a series of ceremonies to name, deliver and commission the ship as well as installing the ship’s first commanding officer, the Navy said on its official Instagram account, @tni_angkatan_laut.

KRI Canopus is an oceangoing hydro-oceanographic survey ship, taking the name of a star as a symbol of guidance for sailors as well as hopes for navigation safety and certainty in the sea.

Canopus is the brightest star in the southern constellation of Carina.

Erwin installed Col. Indragiri Yani Wardhono as the ship’s commanding officer.

The ship was built in three years, involving Indonesian shipyard PT Palindo Marine which built the ship hull in Batam, Riau Islands.

The ship’s first steel cutting took place on Sept. 15, 2023, while the keel laying ceremony was held on Dec. 14, 2023, and the ship was launched on Sept. 24, 2024. The ship was then shipped to Germany using a transporter ship to install all the hydro-oceanographic equipment.
