Sharing her enthusiasm for theater, Actress Chelsea Islan has encouraged young people around the country to take to the stage.

“This is like my reunion with theater. Since last year, I have wanted to go back to theater,” the young actress said in Jakarta on Thursday at a press conference for the play Bunga Penutup Abad.

Chelsea is casted as Annelies in the new play.

“I want to explore and cultivate the feelings of acting on a stage, because it is really different from acting in a movie.”

She recalled her first theatrical experience during her high school days in 2010, when she played as Marty in the musical Grease, and said she had been involved in many stage performances thanks to her mother's support. “My mom is one of my biggest influencers; she always pushed me to join theatrical performances to boost my confidence.”

Regarding her character in the play, she revealed, “Playing as Annelies is one of my dreams; and Pramoedya Ananta Toer is one of my favorite authors."

“I'm proud of Indonesian theater; hopefully people will become more enthusiastic and support local works in theater,” Chelsea said. “I also hope more people from the younger generation will become involved in theater, not only in television and movies, and that there will be an even bigger place and new media to accommodate local talents."
