sia Pulp & Paper (APP) Sinar Mas has again won the Asia Sustainability Reporting Rating (ASRRAT) 2019 award for its economic, social and environmental commitment. The honor is the seventh the company has earned.

The award was received by APP Sinar Mas’ sustainability & stakeholder engagement manager Sera Noviany from Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) ASEAN Hub regional head Michele Lemmens during an event in Bali on Nov. 23.

At the ceremony, Lemmens was accompnied by Certified Sustainabilty Reporting Assurer (CSRA) chairman and National Center for Sustainability Reporting (NCSR) board of directors chairman Ali Darwin.

It is the company’s seventh award since 2005 when the event was first held as the Sustainabillity Reporting Awards. It was renamed ASRRAT in 2018.

The Asia Sustainability Reporting Rating was initiated by NCSR, an independent organization to develop sustainability reporting in Indonesia, as part of acknowledgment and appreciation to companies for their work in communicating corporate performance in economic, social and environmental aspects.

A sustainability report shows corporate or organizational contributions to achievements in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This year saw APP Sinar Mas win the silver category after competing with 50 companies and organizations from Bangladesh, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore. APP Sinar Mas’ sustainability report is deemed compliant with GRI standards.

“This seventh award for APP Sinar Mas proves our commitment to transparent and standard-complying reporting on the company’s sustainable business we have been doing so far,” APP Sinar Mas chief sustainability officer Elim Sritaba said.

APP Sinar Mas 2018 report shows progress in the company’s sustainability target as outlined in its Sustainability Roadmap Vision 2020 (SRV2020).

The report shows the company’s progress on improving operational management and forest conservation as mandated in the Forest Conservation Policy.

“With regard to our operational management, APP Sinar Mas has succeeded in reducing the volume of solid waste dumped to landfills by 41 percent and bringing down the water intensity in the production process by 24 percent compared to the earlier period of the SRV2020 implementation,” Elim said.

“We have also managed to contain the impact of forest fires to just 0.07 percent of the concession area designated for timber supply while deforestation rate has dropped to 0.14 percent of the protected forest. We have also mobilized 284 villages engaged in the Fire-Vigilant Prosperous Village Campaign [DPMA] in the vicinity of the company’s concessions,” Elim said.

The ASRRAT 2019 marks a step forward in APP Sinar Mas’ efforts in its sustainability report after winning a bronze award last year.

APP Sinar Mas has been committed to sustainability reporting based on GRI norms, which has been the global standard for sustainability reporting since 2007.

The ASRRAT award is a form of appreciation by NCSR, as the event initiator, for APP Sinar Mas’ commitment.

“We hope the appreciation will not only help bolster our business but also encourage the company to contribute more to social welfare through environmental campaigns, production, innovation and commitment, because we believe what we do today is for future benefits,” Elim said.
