ingYing Peng, who completed a Bachelor of Surveying with honors at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), said Hong Kong and PolyU had broadened her horizons and prepared her for a job market filled with challenges and opportunities.
In addition to the professional program she underwent at PolyU, YingYing took part in some overseas opportunities to take a closer look at the profession she would undertake.
With PolyU’s support, she visited construction sites in Singapore to see how modular construction was implemented in real-world situations. She also visited a government-established institute that researched water recycling. These were all related to her field of study. These experiences showed her how the industry worked and how theories were put into practice.
PolyU students are also given the chance to put what they have learned into practice. Work-integrated education, an element that all students must complete before graduation, is life-rewarding.
PolyU has an immense network of local and international partners in different fields to provide high-quality internship programs for students. For example, the Beijing branch of Turner & Townsend, where YingYing completed her practicum, is an industry leader.
She said it was inspiring to be able to have a taste of work in a study-related field while she was a student.
She shared that one of the most memorable experiences was the overtime work she finished with her colleagues. They worked on tender assessments to evaluate bidders after a tender had closed. Although her colleagues told her to call it a day, she decided to stay on after office hours and continue working with the team until the assessment work was completed. This turned out to be a truly rewarding practical experience, giving her a hands-on experience and a deeper insight into the kind of work she would come across in future.
