T

he commitment of businesspeople and all parties to implement sustainable development principles must be further enhanced, especially in view of the Covid-19 pandemic. As a state-owned company, PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia Tbk (BRI) remains committed to prioritizing the principles of sustainable development in its business operations.

One of BRI's efforts to implement these principles is through the distribution of CSR BRI Peduli by carrying out the 3P concept, namely Pro People, Pro Planet and Pro Profit. Pro People is BRI's concern for improving the welfare of the community, while Pro Planet is BRI's concern for the environment. Pro Profit, meanwhile, is a financial and/or non-financial benefit to be obtained by beneficiaries that will later impact the company's business in a sustainable manner.

By developing its pro-people, pro-planet and pro-profit concept, BRI as a business entity not only focuses on pursuing material benefits only in its operations. BRI also pays attention to community welfare issues and seeks to help people overcome difficulties they experience.

One of the BRI Peduli flagship programs is “Clean the River”, which is packaged under the theme “Preserve the River, Preserve Life” that was implemented at 19 rivers by 19 BRI Regional Offices throughout Indonesia. Through this program, BRI encourages changes in people's perspective on the function and role of rivers in their lives and future.

BRI initiated the cleaning program in November 2019. This program targets 19 rivers in Banda Aceh, Medan, Pekanbaru, Padang, Palembang, Lampung, Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Malang, Denpasar, Banjarmasin, Makassar, Manado and Jayapura.

Through its projects promoting the spirit of Pro Planet and Pro People, BRI not only carries out river restoration, cleaning and dredging but also builds a number of facilities and infrastructure, such as parks, green open spaces and child-friendly areas, as well as educating the public about maintaining a healthy and useful river flow for the sake of a better life.

This program is expected to have a positive economic impact on the people living around the river. Waste collected from the river is selected and sorted, separated into organic and inorganic/plastic waste. The sorted organic waste can be used for community needs, such as compost, additional animal feed or urban farming and can even be processed into biogas. Meanwhile, the inorganic waste will be chopped using the garbage chopper that BRI provides for the public. After the waste is chopped, it is sold to garbage collectors, and the community also gets money.

"Gradually, after Pro Planet and Pro People are realized, the benefits of river cleaning and proper waste management will provide economic benefits for the surrounding community, so that Pro Profit can be realized. The money generated from the sale of waste in the future will be saved through a BRI account and can be withdrawn through the BRILink Agent, BRI Work Unit or other BRI e-channel networks, "said BRI Corporate Secretary Aestika Oryza Gunarto.
