Ambon fishery products see export growth

F

ishery products exported from Ambon, Maluku province, are growing in popularity among foreign customers. To meet the increasing demand, the Ambon Customs Office, which facilitates trade and provides industrial assistance, is continuing its efforts to give the necessary services, assistance, and export facilities for fishery businesses in the region.

The acting head of Ambon Customs Office, Budi Santoso, noted that the region’s fishery products had become a popular commodity among international customers, and that the office was committed to provide maximal services and facilities to the region’s fishery exporters.

"The potential is huge, so [the sector] needs support from all parties to succeed," said Budi.

The Ambon Customs Office on Tuesday opened its doors to Singapore as a new export destination for the region’s fishery products. PT Harta Samudra delivered the inaugural shipment of eight boxes containing 240,000 kilograms of yellowfin tuna loin, with an export value of US$2,784.39.

Budi explained that Harta Samudra had been exporting fishery products to Vietnam, but had now expanded its shipping services to Singapore. He expressed the hope that this was a good sign of growth in fishery exports for Maluku, especially Ambon.

In addition, the Ambon Customs Office helped facilitate exports in collaboration with PT Rajawali Laut Timur to Hong Kong on Friday, even though it was a national holiday.

The shipment contained “various types of fish, such as sunu grouper, tiger grouper, ungar fish or oblique-banded sweetlips, live grouper and parrot fish, with a net weight of 18,030 kilograms [and] a foreign exchange value of exports reaching $294,818”, said Budi.

He added that the fish were distributed from the government-operated marine fisheries facility (BPBL) in Waiheru on Ambon Bay, with the export of live fish shipping out to Hong Kong on the very next day.

Rajawali Laut Timur has obtained licenses for fish quarantine installation (IKI) and quality fish quarantine methods (CKIB) from the fish quarantine head Muhammad Hatta Arisandi at the Ambon Quality Control Agency (BKIPM).

Budi was present to mark the momentous occasion, along with the head of the Ambon export and customs support team, M. Yusuf Nasution, as well as several representatives from other relevant agencies, including Karolis Iwamony, the head of cultivation at the Maluku Marine and Fisheries Service, Mubarok, the head of the Ambon Marine and Fishery Resources Surveillance and Control (PSDKP) Office and Sarwono, the head of the Ambon Marine Cultivation Fisheries Center.

"We are grateful for the support of all parties,” said Rajawali Laut Maluku director Hasan.

“Even though there are many obstacles, we still received with fast, solution-based services. As a result, we are currently facilitating the operations of around 1,000 assisted fishermen.”
