eothermal energy is one of Indonesia’s major potential energy sources, with the country’s potential geothermal reserves amounting to 23,965.5 megawatts (MW), the second-largest in the world.

Currently, only 9.8 percent of Indonesia’s geothermal energy potential has been utilized to produce an installed power generation capacity of 2,342.63 MW from 15 Working Areas. Potential geothermal energy is one of the energy sources investors are taking notice of amid the current energy transition era.

Considering said extraordinary natural resource potential, PT Pertamina (Persero) is ready to showcase the geothermal projects currently operated by its subsidiary, PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE), at the ASEAN Indo Pacific Forum (AIPF) flagship event, which will be held from Sep. 5 to 6 in Jakarta.

Pertamina vice president corporate communications Fadjar Djoko Santoso explained that Pertamina plays a strategic role in managing geothermal energy as Indonesia’s state-owned energy company by operating 15 Working Areas in Indonesia, with 13 of them managed independently by Pertamina as its own operations and the remaining two being jointly managed with a partner through a joint operation contract.

According to Fajar, Pertamina will continue to develop geothermal energy to produce electricity from a renewable energy source because the green infrastructure is critical to ensure energy sustainability into the future.

"With the support of the Indonesian government, Pertamina is ready to build cooperation and collaboration with global partners on top of the momentum provided by the 2023 AIPF flagship event. With these strategic [geothermal] projects, Indonesia is strengthening its position as the epicenter of economic growth in ASEAN," Fadjar said.

Currently, Indonesia’s geothermal projects can produce geothermal energy at a rate equal to 4,524 gigawatts per hour (GWh) of electricity. In February 2023, Pertamina successfully carried out an initial public offering (IPO) for PGE and raised Rp 9.05 trillion from the issuance of 10.35 billion shares.

The 15 geothermal Working Areas wholly or partially operated by Pertamina are Mount Sibuali-Buali and Mount Sibayak-Sinabung in North Sumatra; Penuh River (Kerinci) in Jambi; Hululais in Bengkulu; Lumut Balai and Margabayur in South Sumatra; Way Panas in Lampung; Kamojang Darajat, Karaha Cakrabuana, Pangalengan and Cibeureum Parabakti in West Java; Tabanan in Bali; Lahendong and Kotamobagu in North Sulawesi; Mount Lawu in Central Java; and Seulawah in Aceh.

"In accordance with Pertamina's master plan, geothermal energy development will continue to be increased until 2026, when its production is targeted to double to 1,108 MW [1.1 GW]," Fadjar concluded.

As a leader in energy transition, Pertamina is committed to supporting the 2060 net-zero emissions targets by continuing to drive programs that directly impact the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All these efforts are in line with the implementation of environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles in all Pertamina's business lines and operations.
