T Pertamina (Persero) and Boeing has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore opportunities for developing Indonesia's sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) ecosystem as part of efforts to support the decarbonization of the aviation sector and accelerate the country's transition toward net-zero emission (NZE).

Under President Prabowo Subianto’s Asta Cita vision, Indonesia is advancing SAF  development as a key pathway to reducing carbon emissions from the aviation sector and to help advance a more sustainable aviation industry. According to the ASEAN 2050 SAF Outlook Report, Indonesia ranks in the top three in ASEAN in having the greatest excess of SAF, with a potential surplus of up to 2.2 million barrels of SAF per day by 2050.

As part of the agreement, Pertamina and Boeing will collaborate to explore various aspects of SAF ecosystem development in Indonesia, including identifying potential feedstock sources, advancing technology development, and supporting the development of policies needed to accelerate SAF implementation.

PT Pertamina (Persero) president director Simon Aloysius Mantiri said that for Pertamina, the collaboration is a long-term investment in building Indonesia's national SAF ecosystem.

“With Indonesia's abundant domestic resources, Pertamina's refining capabilities, and Boeing's global aviation expertise, we are confident this collaboration will accelerate the development of a competitive SAF industry, create greater value for Indonesia's economy, and support the decarbonization of the aviation sector.”

Boeing forecasts that Southeast Asia’s passenger air traffic will increase at a 7 percent annual rate, with regional airlines needing 4,885 new airplanes through 2044. Amid this growth, the use of SAF is expected to be a key solution to reduce carbon emissions from the aviation sector.

SAF, when unblended, can reduce aviation’s lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80 percent compared to conventional jet fuel.

"Indonesia is well positioned to lead the growth of sustainable aviation in Southeast Asia,” said Indra Duivenvoorde, managing director of Boeing Indonesia.

“We look forward to working with Pertamina on a range of SAF-related activities, from identifying potential feedstocks to supporting education and training on opportunities that SAF provides, to support the sustainable future of Indonesia’s aviation industry and the country’s broader economy.”

As part of the development of Indonesia's national SAF ecosystem, Pertamina has  launched a number of initiatives, including the production and certification of Pertamina  SAF, its implementation with Pelita Air, and the development of the Cilacap Biorefinery project by PT Pertamina Patra Niaga to produce SAF and hydrotreated vegetable oil using used cooking oil and other waste-based sustainable feedstocks.
