The police's newly installed digital system for monitoring traffic may mean a new era – for both traffic police and errant drivers.
he Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE) e-ticketing system that the Jakarta Police have installed has identified the most common traffic violations that occur on major thoroughfares in the capital.
“The majority of recurring violations are running red lights, not wearing helmets and crossing [stop lines] at intersections,” Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono said on Sunday.
He added that the ETLE system had recorded 1,000 traffic violations since the system was installed on July 1.
Argo said that traffic violators would receive a notification from the police.
“We hope that, with this system, drivers will become more disciplined and comply with the traffic laws,” he added.
Twelve ETLE cameras have been installed along Jl. MH Thamrin from the Jl. Sudirman intersection to Jl. Gajah Mada.
Argo said that additional ETLE cameras would be installed at other locations on the city’s major roads.
Jakarta Police traffic law enforcement head Sr. Comr. Yusuf said that the new ETLE cameras were technologically more advanced than CCTV cameras.
“The new ETLE cameras are able to zoom inside the car using the ‘checkpoint' feature to see if the driver and passengers are wearing seat belts. In addition, the ‘speed radar’ feature records vehicles that drive over the speed limit,” Yusuf said as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com.
Once an ETLE camera captures the image of a violator, it transmits the data to the traffic police for verification and identification. The traffic police then sends a warning letter to the registered address of the driver. (bry)
