itachi ABB Power Grids has officially rebranded its name to Hitachi Energy and the business has renewed its purpose of advancing a sustainable energy future for all.

The company’s new purpose is in line with the recent 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26, in which countries and world organizations pledged carbon neutrality through emission-reduction targets in line with the Paris Agreement.

Apart from the pledges made by many countries to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by the middle of the 21st century and keeping warming under 1.5 degrees Celsius, COP26 also underscored the importance of working together in the fight against climate change. The collaboration involves varying stakeholders, including governments, businesses and civil society. The agreed actions that countries should take to achieve the COP26 targets include accelerating the phase-out of coal and encouraging investment in renewables.

It comes as no surprise, therefore, to learn that energy used to generate electricity is at the center stage given that coal and fossil fuels, nonrenewable energy sources used to produce electricity, are among the causes of greenhouse gas emissions. With the net-zero carbon emissions target by 2050, there is an urgent need for a global energy transition.

In response to the challenges regarding the energy transition, Hitachi Energy, the global technology leader, eagerly wants to be part of the solution. The company’s new strategic direction is designed to expand from the grid into wider decarbonization solutions.

Through its Sustainability 2030 strategic plan, Hitachi Energy is addressing the urgency of the global energy transition and has set clear targets in Planet, People, Peace and Partnerships. Hitachi Energy has set targets to become carbon-neutral in its own operations and it expects to hit the first-step target achieving 100 percent fossil-free electricity in its operations by 2022.

Hitachi Energy CEO Claudio Facchin stated, “At Hitachi Energy, we are championing the urgency of a clean energy transition, through innovation and collaboration. There are many pathways toward a carbon-neutral future – to tackle this global challenge, we nurture diverse global teams bringing authentic passion and enduring ownership.”

“By 2050, global electrification will near‐double in demand, and electricity will be the backbone of the entire energy system. At Hitachi Energy, we have pioneered many of the technologies needed for advancing a sustainable energy future for all – and we are committed to continue pushing the boundaries of innovation.”

“With our new name – Hitachi Energy – we are broadening our commitment to creating real impact for our customers and partners, our people and society,” Claudio added. “In pursuit of such goals, Hitachi Energy invests in collaborations with countries and organizations alike.”

Hitachi Energy’s partners have committed to ambitious net-zero targets. At the same time, Hitachi Energy pledges to do its part by empowering communities and industries affiliated with its partners. Hitachi Energy with these leading energy technologies and innovations can provide solutions to help contribute to and establish a society that is more sustainable, flexible and secure.

Grid edge solutions

To complement interconnections and meet the growing need for energy system flexibility, Hitachi Energy is also supporting customers with grid edge solutions such as microgrids and energy storage. A recent example can be seen in Cordova, Alaska, where the community has been able to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, while achieving energy independence. In Indonesia, Hitachi Energy has deployed smart microgrid solutions in Bontang, East Kalimantan, and also in a remote community of more than 290 homes in Semau Island, East Nusa Tenggara.

One of the related topics is the importance of digitalization, which is critical for overcoming the complexity and capacity challenges brought about by the larger volumes of variable renewable energy being integrated into the world’s energy system. For example, by combining advanced digital solutions and services, Lumada Asset Performance Management provides health and performance insights to prevent critical asset failures while optimizing asset lifecycle costs. It enables customers to leverage online and offline data to drive more intelligent, risk-based approaches to asset management.

Hitachi Energy is fostering collaboration with customers and partners to find global solutions to solve the global challenge of an inclusive and equitable carbon-neutral future. The business earlier this year launched its EconiQ product, a portfolio designed to improve the environmental performance of the grid and power equipment. It also recently launched transformer products designed for use in floating offshore wind projects.

According to the company, Hitachi Energy reflects the rapidly evolving energy landscape and the opportunity to create economic, environmental and social value.

Joining under Hitachi Group with the new name of Hitachi Energy, the company is continuing to serve its customers in core markets, while at the same time broadening into new growth areas, such as industry, mobility, data centers and other new players into the energy ecosystem.

The business formally registered Hitachi Energy Ltd. on June 30, 2021. Hitachi Ltd. has an 80.1 percent stake in the joint venture which started operations on July 1, 2020, and ABB Ltd. holds the balance.
