The move is expected to spur commodity downstreaming in industrializing Indonesia.
resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said on Monday that the government would ban bauxite exports starting this year to spur commodity downstreaming to industrialize the economy.
The export ban was initially slated to start in mid-2023, as detailed in Energy and Mineral Resources Ministerial Regulation No. 17/2020. Bauxite is the main ingredient in the production of tin.
Jokowi said the government would also ban exports of "raw copper" starting in 2023, which is in line with the energy ministry regulation.

“The impact of developing these downstream industries will be huge. Aside from creating as many jobs as possible for the people, it can also create a huge added value,” Jokowi said at the anniversary event of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), of which the president is a member.
The government banned nickel ore exports in 2020, a move that shook global markets because Indonesia was the world’s top producer of the metal. Jokowi said this ban led nickel-related exports to increase more than tenfold to Rp 280 trillion (US$21 billion).
