Industry groups unhappy with newest 'ojol' fare adjustment

Two large transportation groups have objected to the government's new fare structure for on-demand motorcycle taxis, saying the adjusted fares were disproportionate to the recent fuel hike.

T

he Transportation Ministry has announced newly adjusted fares for ojol (on-demand motorcycle taxis) after calling off a previous fare adjustment at the last minute, but industry associations have voiced several objections against the new scheme.

“There are three components for the readjusted [ojol] fares. They are driver’s costs, which takes into consideration the minimum wage and drivers’ insurance, a minimum 4-kilometer [distance limit] per order, and the fuel hike,” Hendro Sugiatno, the ministry’s land transportation director general, told a press conference on Wednesday.

The new fare scheme is effective from Sept. 10 and maintains the previously established three-zone system, with the only changes made to the fare structure.

Igun Wicaksono, chairman of the Two-Wheeled Movement of Indonesia (GARDA Indonesia), said the group would not accept the new fare scheme because it did not meet several points in the drivers’ demands.

“We previously conveyed [our demands] to the Transportation Ministry during the online meeting with the ministry’s officials and drivers’ associations from various provinces on Tuesday,” said Igun.

These demands included giving provincial regulators the authority to study, formulate and enact new fares in collaboration with local stakeholders and drivers’ associations.

In addition, GARDA also demanded that the ministry restrict on-demand transportation apps to a maximum charge of 10 percent on all fares, since anything above that would take a toll on drivers’ incomes.
