This amounts to a decline of 2.05 percent compared with last year. This year, rice output is projected to hover at around 30.90 million tonnes.
BPS data showed rice production between October and December this year is expected to fall by 10.92 percent to 4.78 million tonnes from 5.37 million tonnes last year.
“The potential [monthly] rice deficit is expected to widen until the end of 2023, with the largest deficit in December at 1.45 million tonnes,” Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, acting BPS head said on Monday.
BPS data estimates there will be rice deficits of 0.5 and 0.95 million tonnes in October and November, respectively.
Following these declines in rice production, BPS has also projected that the country’s overall rice surplus will fall by 79 percent to 0.28 million tonnes at the end of this year compared with 1.34 million tonnes last year.
