apan has expressed the hope of expediting the development of the mass rapid transit (MRT) next year, according to the Office of the Coordinating Economic Minister.
The minister’s office said on Wednesday that the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) hoped to kick start construction of MRT Jakarta’s East–West line, the third phase of the MRT devlopment, by mid-2024.
The corridor will initially run between Kali Deres and Ujung Menteng in Jakarta, but the proposed design has the line also connecting Balaraja in Banten province all the way to Cikarang in West Java, about 90 kilometers in total.
Currently, both Indonesia and Japan are working on the second phase that extends the north-south corridor to Kota from the first phase that runs between the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Central Jakarta and Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta, which after its completion will extend the current 16 km line to 28 km.
The second phase is projected to become operational around 2028 or 2029, which the government says is due to adjustments made along the project.
JICA president Akihito Tanaka welcomed the government's unwavering commitment to continue ongoing strategic infrastructure projects, beyond the MRT, that exist between Japan and Indonesia, encompassing toll road construction and Patimban Port in West Java, as well as in the oil and gas sector.
"We anticipate the enduring progress of these strategic projects as fundamental pillars of cooperation between our two nations," said Tanaka.
