ndonesia and Norway have signed a US$100 million contribution agreement (CA) for Indonesia’s continued performance in reducing deforestation during the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 periods.

Joko Tri Haryanto, president director of Indonesia’s Environmental Fund Management Agency (BPDLH), and Norwegian Ambassador to Indonesia Rut Krüger Giverin signed the agreement on Wednesday in Jakarta, witnessed by Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar.

“This addendum to the CA is a huge achievement. This is based on verified emissions reduction from [the periods] 2017-2018 to 2018-2019,” Siti said, as quoted by Antara News.

Giverin said the agreement’s continuation fulfilled Norway’s commitment to curb deforestation, as reiterated during the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai.

The new fund will be used to support the operational plan of the Forestry and Other Land Uses (FOLU) Net Sink 2030, which serves as a framework for Norwegian contributions, as the forestry and land use sector produce 60 percent of Indonesia’s emissions.

“The operational plan is very ambitious and impressive, covering all policy measures taken by Indonesia’s government in reducing the deforestation rate,” Giverin said, adding that the two countries both prioritized climate and natural crisis control.
