ndonesia’s debut hosting of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Asia Pacific Forum in Jakarta is expected to address the city’s notorious congestion and disaster-relief strategies, as well as carbon-neutrality plans, including those involving the use of intelligent systems.

“If successful, Indonesia could emerge as a leader in smart transportation systems for Southeast Asia,” ITS Asia Pacific secretary-general Akio Yamamoto said in a media briefing on Wednesday.

The upcoming ITS Asia Pacific Forum in Jakarta, scheduled for May 28-30 at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) Senayan, marks the country’s second hosting of the event in Southeast Asia after Singapore.

Jakarta’s traffic congestion deteriorated in 2023, even as its global traffic ranking improved slightly as measured by Dutch navigation firm TomTom. Last year also saw record levels of air pollution in the city.

Yamamoto, who also serves as ITS Japan president, expects potential bilateral cooperation and fruitful knowledge-sharing on disaster management between Japan and Indonesia as the two countries both live along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region exposed to major earthquakes and active volcanoes.

“Both countries are prone to earthquakes,” he noted. “The forum presents an opportunity to exchange knowledge on disaster preparedness, including strategies for evacuation routes and disaster mapping.”
