Bowing to the wave of public uproar over the Trade Ministry’s carry-on restrictions, Zulkifli has promised to tweak the newly enacted regulation on imports.
rade Minister Zulkifli Hasan plans to revise the restrictions on carry-on goods for international flights following widespread protests, just days after the rule went into effect on Sunday.
Public outcry erupted on social media over the stipulations in Trade Ministry Regulation No. 36/2023 on import policies and rules, particularly over the restrictions on electronic goods international passengers import in their carry-on luggage.
The restrictions apply to both foreign and Indonesian nationals, including migrant workers.
“Due to numerous complaints, we will evaluate [the regulation] after sending a letter to the Office of the Coordinating Economic Minister to discuss it further,” Zulkifli told the reporters on Thursday, as quoted by CNN Indonesia.
The trade minister did not elaborate on any specific changes to be considered, nor when the regulation might be revised.

Under the newly enacted regulation, each person arriving to Indonesia on an international flight is only permitted to bring a maximum of two laptops, computer tablets, smartphones or a combination of these devices.
