The plan would mark a shift in the company’s automobile focus, as it primarily relies on internal combustion engine (ICE) and hybrid vehicle sales.
ublicly listed conglomerate Astra International aims to launch more battery electric vehicle (BEV) products for both the four-wheeler and two-wheeler segments in the coming years.
The plan would mark a shift in the company’s automobile focus, as it primarily relies on internal combustion engine (ICE) and hybrid vehicle sales.
“Toyota Astra Motor, our joint venture with Toyota, plans to launch more BEV [car] models in the next two years. Meanwhile, Astra Honda Motor, another joint venture with Honda, also plans to make more electric motorcycles during the same period,” said Astra International’s president director Djony Bunarto at a press conference on Tuesday, as quoted by Kumparan.
Astra International leads Indonesia’s automotive market with at least 55 percent market share, with most of its sales coming from ICE vehicles.
Several years ago, the firm began shifting its focus to hybrid models, which combine ICE and electric systems, and currently holds a 75 percent market share in the segment.
However, due to limited product offerings, it has not been able to conquer the BEV market, which is currently dominated by China-based Wuling and South Korean automaker Hyundai.
At the moment, Astra only sells six BEV models and one electric motorbike model, compared with 13 hybrid vehicle models under the Toyota, Lexus and BMW brands.
