IKN Authority leaders quit before new capital's August inauguration

A surprise press conference revealed on Monday that the IKN Authority head and deputy head had both quit, weeks after the President had received their resignation letters, which experts say could be a bad sign for the nation's new capital and both existing and potential investors.

T

he head and deputy head of the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) Authority have resigned just over two months ahead of the inauguration of the country’s new capital city on Independence Day, with analysts saying it could send a bad signal to potential investors.

IKN Authority head Bambang Susantono and his deputy Dhony Rahajoe had submitted their resignation letters to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo a few weeks ago, but State Secretary Pratikno only revealed the news on Monday.

During a surprise press conference at the State Palace in Jakarta, Pratikno explained that the President had issued a decree only that day on Bambang and Dhony’s resignation.

He declined to elaborate on the pair’s reason for quitting their posts, saying that neither had provided any in their resignation letters.

Dhony said in a statement published on Monday that he would "continue to support the success of IKN".

The Jakarta Post was unable to reach Bambang, Dhony or their subordinates to elaborate on the reasons for their resignations, while the IKN Authority has yet to issue a statement on their departure.
