KAI is seeking to optimize its coal transportation business to beef up its financial position after the government assigned the company to bear the loan payments for the Jakarta-Bandung high speed railway project.
T Kereta Api Logistik (Kalog), the logistics arm of state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), is aiming to transport 28.75 million tonnes of coal by the end of the year.
The figure marks a 13 percent increase from the 25.36 million tonnes of coal the company moved last year.
“The coal transportation service remains the backbone of the company’s revenue,” said Kalog CEO TLN Ahmad Malik Syah on Sunday, as quoted by Kumparan.
In October of last year, KAI said it would optimize its coal transportation business to beef up its financial position after the government assigned the company to bear the loan payments for the Jakarta-Bandung high speed railway project, named Whoosh, as reported by Kontan.
Other efforts to improve its finances include letting KAI retain its dividends, payable to the government, on its balance sheet.
As of April 2024, the company had transported more than 6 million tonnes of coal by rail, generating more than Rp 134 billion, Ahmad said.
This year, the company is aiming to rack up Rp 594 billion (US$36.54 million) from the coal transportation business.
