The project would result in a 50,000-kilometer-long transmission network connecting many regions across the archipelago.
tate-owned electricity company (PLN) said it would need US$25 billion to build a transmission grid connecting renewable energy sources across Indonesia, also known as a green super grid.
PLN president director Darmawan Prasodjo said the grid would play an important role in enabling the country’s shift toward renewable energy sources as well as achieving the nation’s net-zero emission pledges, as quoted by CNBC Indonesia.
He explained that the project would result in a 50,000-kilometer-long transmission network connecting many regions across the archipelago.
“If you want to circumnavigate the Earth, go ahead,” Darmawan quipped, citing the Earth’s circumference, which is only around 42,000 kilometers, much shorter than the transmission length needed for the project.

Despite its abundance of potential sources, Indonesia’s renewable energy resources are diverse and often located in remote areas that are far from highly populated locations with high energy demand, according to a PLN statement in early May.
Darmwawan stressed the importance of the grid as it would help move electricity between these places.
