he government has received proposals on seven new special economic zones (SEZ) from businesses, including an SEZ located close to the nation’s future capital Nusantara in East Kalimantan, according to the National SEZ Council.
Rizal Edwin Manansang, the council’s acting secretary, said the East Kalimantan SEZ would generate power and serve as an economic development hub for the new capital.
The other proposed SEZs included one in nickel-rich Sulawesi and several on Java, Rizal said.
“So, they will include power generation, smelters for nickel and bauxite,” Rizal told a media briefing on Monday, as quoted by Kompas.com, adding that no other details could be shared publicly at this time.

Indonesia’s SEZs have been granted a variety of fiscal incentives, including yearslong corporate tax reductions as well as import tax and duty exemptions. Certain SEZs are also eligible for additional incentives related to tourism as well as customs and excise.
SEZs also promise greater ease of doing business through flexible land permits, no export obligations, 80-year land concessions and foreign property ownership rights, as well as other benefits.
