Major union calls strikes over govt defiance of jobs law ruling

The KSPI has released a statement announcing nationwide strikes on Nov. 19 and Dec. 24 over the government's failure to comply with the Constitutional Court's 2021 ruling to amend the highly contentious jobs law, as well as its failure to meet workers' minimum wage demands conveyed last month.

T

he Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI) has announced a nationwide strike involving millions of workers on Nov. 19 and Dec. 24, expressing doubt that the government would comply with the Constitutional Court’s ruling on the Job Creation Law.

KSPI chairman Said Iqbal, who also chairs the Labor Party, said in a press statement on Monday that around 5 million workers from at least 15,000 factories and service providers, including those in the port and transportation sectors, would take part in the strike.

“The [government’s] noncompliance is evident from [its] plan to set a minimum wage without considering the Constitutional Court’s decision, which emphasizes workers’ right to a decent, steady wage,” he said.

The strike action would also represent workers’ dissatisfaction over the minimum wage formula in the Job Creation Law, which the government and businesses were mandated to follow since the law was passed in 2020, the statement said.

According to Said, the Labor Party has called on workers in 38 provinces and 393 cities to support the nationwide strike and organize so it ran smoothly.
