T

he economic potential from tourists is projected to reach Rp 146.3 trillion (US$9.23 billion) during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

According to estimates from the Tourism Ministry, foreign tourists are projected to make between 1.02 million and 1.325 million visits, contributing an economic potential of Rp 22.55 trillion to Rp 29 trillion. Meanwhile, domestic tourists have even greater potential with an estimated 78.2 million trips, generating an economic potential of Rp 117.3 trillion.

A survey conducted by the Transportation Ministry indicated that most tourist activities are concentrated on Java Island, particularly in Central Java, at 17.1 percent, and Yogyakarta at 15.77 percent.

“We hope this moment can serve as a significant driver for national economic growth while also enhancing Indonesia's tourism image, providing a comfortable, safe and seamless travel experience,” Deputy Tourism Minister Ni Luh Enik "Puspa" Ernawati said on Saturday, as quoted by kompas.com.

Separately, Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said that approximately 110.67 million people are expected to travel during the Christmas and New Year holidays in 2024/2025. This figure is based on a survey regarding potential movements during the upcoming holiday season.

“We have conducted a survey, and the results indicate that the potential movement of people during the Christmas and New Year period in 2024/2025 will reach 110.67 million. Most of this movement will occur on Java Island, including urban agglomerations. This is the number we are anticipating,” Dudy said in an official statement during a coordination meeting for holidays on Friday.

The peak travel periods are predicted to occur in two waves: on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31, 2024. The return peak is expected over two days, from Jan. 1 to 2, 2025.

During the meeting, Coordinating Human Development and Culture Minister Pratikno said that the coordination meeting aimed to ensure that public movement during the Christmas and New Year period is safe and comfortable.

Pratikno noted that many details need to be anticipated for the upcoming holiday season.

“The main challenge is that we are entering rainy season. Then there is also potential for hydrometeorology disasters. We must anticipate excessive rains and others,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Tourism Ministry has prepared several strategies to maximize the movement of domestic and foreign tourists ahead of the Christmas 2024 and New Year 2025 holidays.

Ni Luh Puspa outlined the main strategies during an online coordination meeting on Saturday.

The Tourism Ministry will draft and disseminate a circular to promote safe, comfortable and enjoyable tourism activities.

In preparation for the year-end holiday season, the ministry will visit various tourist destinations to assess their readiness for the expected influx of visitors.

To attract tourists, the ministry, in collaboration with strategic partners, is developing Christmas and New Year promotions and offering a range of attractive tour packages.

From December 2024 to January 2025, several events are planned that are expected to enhance tourist activity, including 10 regional events, three national events and four international events.
