State asset fund Danantara Indonesia and wealth fund Indonesia Investment Authority (INA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with French mining giant Eramet to explore investments in the nickel supply chain, including to support the electric vehicle industry.

The agreement, witnessed by President Prabowo Subianto and his French counterpart President Emmanuel Macron at the State Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday, will assess nickel projects from upstream mining to downstream processing.

The partnership aims to develop an integrated EV battery raw material ecosystem in Indonesia, the world’s largest nickel producer and holder of the biggest known reserves.

“With a focus on downstream processing, energy transition and critical minerals, our priorities align closely with Danantara’s vision,” said Eramet CEO Paulo Castellari, as quoted in a statement.

“We’re ready to contribute through our expertise in sustainable mining and long-term commitment to strategic industry development.”
