talian energy giant Eni has announced a significant natural gas discovery at the Konta-1 exploration well in the Kutei Basin, approximately 50 kilometers off the coast of East Kalimantan. Estimates indicate 600 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of gas initially in place, with a potential of beyond 1 trillion cubic feet (Tcf).
The discovery, made within the Muara Bakau Production Sharing Contract (PSC), was drilled to a depth of 4,575 meters in 570 m of water. Eni found gas across four separate Miocene-age sandstone reservoirs with strong properties. A successful drill stem test in one reservoir flowed at a rate of up to 31 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) of gas and approximately 700 barrels per day (bpd) of condensate.
Based on these results, Eni estimates the well has a potential multipool production rate of up to 80 mmscfd of gas and 1,600 bpd of condensate.
"The Konta discovery is located near existing facilities and adjacent to existing discoveries, providing significant synergies for development. Options for a fast-track development are already under study," Eni stated in its official announcement on Tuesday.
“The discovery also provides additional confidence for continuing the planned exploration drilling campaign, which includes drilling an additional four wells in 2026 in the Kutei Basin.”
The Muara Bakau PSC is operated by Eni with an 88.33 percent participating interest, while Saka Energi, a unit of state-owned PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN), holds the remaining 11.66 percent.
Muara Bakau is part of 19 exploration blocks, 14 in Indonesia and five in Malaysia, that will be managed by NewCo, a joint venture between Eni and Malaysia's state energy firm Petronas. NewCo will operate as a financially independent entity, with an investment plan of more than US$15 billion over the next five years.
