T

he tourism and hospitality sector is facing renewed pressure after the Christmas and New Year holiday period delivered “weaker-than-expected” results, fueling concerns that subdued household spending power and persistently high transport costs could continue to dampen demand ahead of the Ramadan and Idul Fitri holidays in March.

The Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) stated that indicators such as declining hotel occupancy rates, shorter lengths of stay and uneven regional visitor distribution suggest a slowdown, despite official data showing an increase in overall mobility.

“Throughout 2025, compared with 2024, there was actually no growth [in occupancy rates]. In fact, they fell by nearly 4 percent,” PHRI secretary-general Maulana ‘Alan’ Yusran told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

“The situation is almost the same as in 2022, when COVID was ending and the market was just beginning to recover. On a year-on-year basis, the pressure in 2025 is quite severe, lower than both 2024 and 2023.”

Alan added that the average length of stay has also shortened significantly, falling to just two to three days.

“In the past, we could expect at least five or six days, with occupancy reaching around 90 percent,” he said.
