ormer Bank Indonesia (BI) deputy governor Juda Agung was installed as deputy finance minister on Thursday to replace Thomas “Tommy” Djiwandono, a nephew of President Prabowo Subianto, who is set to begin his new post as a deputy governor at the central bank.
Juda served in his previous role at BI from 2022 for a term that was originally set to run until next year. However, he resigned from his post with immediate effect on Jan. 13, just a week before the President nominated Tommy as the next BI deputy governor on Jan. 19.
“The reason for my resignation [as BI deputy governor] is clearly because I have been tasked to serve as deputy finance minister. I certainly cannot hold the role of BI deputy governor simultaneously. These are two different authorities,” Juda said on Feb. 5, after his inauguration at the State Palace in Central Jakarta.
He also said the President had emphasized the importance of policy coordination between the Finance Ministry and the central bank, including “policies in the real sector”, as part of “effective” efforts “to drive economic growth in the future”.
Juda said he believed the role swap could strengthen synergy between the fiscal and monetary authorities as well as improve economic policymaking.
“My extensive experience at Bank Indonesia, and subsequently at the fiscal authority, will certainly create better synergy as will Pak [Mr.] Thomas, who formerly served at the fiscal authority before moving to the monetary authority,” he added.
