Prabowo querying slow progress on '3 million houses' program, Hashim says

The President's brother, who heads the public housing task force, says he has temporarily allayed Prabowo's concerns by pointing to the relatively recent existence of the housing ministry as a stand-alone institution.

P

resident Prabowo Subianto has asked about the sluggish rollout of his flagship program to build 3 million houses a year, according to his brother Hashim Djojohadikusumo, who also heads the public housing task force head.

“Frankly, a few weeks ago I met the President and we talked about this program. He asked, ‘Why is the housing program moving rather slowly? It seems slow,'” Hashim said on Monday during the launch of a railway-linked housing project near Manggarai Station in South Jakarta, as quoted by Kompas.com.

He told the President that bureaucratic issues at the Public Housing and Settlements Ministry had slowed progress, Hashim said, while noting that the ministry had been established only around a year ago.

As part of a cabinet restructuring after Prabowo took office in October 2024, the Public Works and Housing Ministry under the previous administration was split into two institutions handling distinct functions.

Nevertheless, Hashim added, “the President wants [the program] to be quick”.
