T Freeport Indonesia is preparing to restart production at the Grasberg Block Cave underground mine within the next two or three weeks, marking a key step in its operational ramp-up this year.
This comes after a landslide at the Grasberg Block Cave mine on Sept. 8, 2025, when approximately 800,000 tonnes of wet material surged through multiple underground levels, halting operations at the site, with seven workers confirmed dead.
Freeport Indonesia president director Tony Wenas said on Saturday that the company would begin production at blocks 2 and 3 of the Grasberg Block Cave before gradually increasing output.
Production at block 1 of the Grasberg Block Cave is scheduled to begin next year, completing the phased rollout of the underground expansion.
He described the Grasberg Block Cave underground mine as the backbone of Freeport’s future production, making the acceleration of new block operations critical to meeting this year’s targets.
The company is aiming to produce 1.1 billion pounds of copper and 800,000 ounces of gold this year.
Maintaining output in line with these targets remains Freeport’s top priority, Tony said, as the firm focuses on stabilizing and optimizing operations.
