P

resident Prabowo Subianto has called on ASEAN member states to accelerate the development of renewable energy and make progress on the long-proposed Trans-Borneo Power Grid, warning that energy security is no longer a distant goal but an “urgent” necessity amid rising global pressure and instability in the Middle East.

Speaking on Thursday at the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Special Summit on the sidelines of the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, the Philippines, Prabowo said the region could not afford to treat the energy transition as a long-term aspiration.

“Energy security is one of the important issues we face today. Given the growing global pressure and volatility in the Middle East, this is no longer a long-term problem, but an urgent one,” the President said.

Prabowo highlighted that the BIMP-EAGA subregion held vast, underutilized potential for hydro power, solar and wind energy, as well as fertile land that could support both energy and food security.

He challenged member states to move beyond rhetoric. “The question is whether we are ready to act on this potential. Not only to meet our subregional needs but also to contribute to ASEAN’s energy transition.”
