he government is planning to take over local granite tile producer Granito to prevent a complete shutdown after the company was hit hard by surging industrial gas prices, according to the All-Indonesian Workers Union Confederation (KSPSI).
KSPSI president Andi Gani Nena Wea said the decision was made to rescue the company and protect its workers.
“If the company is unable to continue [operations], even with reduced gas prices, and it still doesn’t resume operations, I emphasize that the government will take over the company to protect the workers who have been laid off,” he said on Monday, as quoted by Kompas.com.
The government has decided to hold the fixed natural gas price (HGBT) for selected industries at US$6.50-$7 per million British thermal units (MMBTU) following an intensive meeting with state-owned oil and gas giant Pertamina and gas distributor PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN).
Meanwhile, liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices for non-HGBT industries have been slashed from $23 to $13 per MMBTU.
Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said on Monday that the decision was made in response to the current geopolitical dynamics impacting the energy sector and the national economy.
