The communications ministry and US tech giant Meta are set to form a joint team to tackle a sharp rise in spam comments flooding platforms with gambling promotions, with a view to expanding cooperation with other social networks.

he government is stepping up its crackdown on online gambling promotions that are flooding comment sections across social media platforms, following the detection of a sharp rise in such bot-driven spam.

The Communications and Digital Ministry and United States tech giant Meta agreed on Tuesday to establish a working group to address and combat the illicit campaigns.

"We have agreed to establish a joint team to address online gambling on digital platforms, particularly the recent surge in spam comments," Communications and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid told reporters on June 30, after a meeting with Meta executives.

"We will also engage other platforms to jointly tackle this new modus operandi of promoting online gambling through spam comments on public accounts," she added.

The number of spam comments related to gambling jumped 128 percent in June compared to the level recorded at the beginning of this year, the ministry’s data showed.

These spam comments rely on automated systems that monitor social media activity in real time across multiple platforms, detecting posts that are attracting high engagement and then rapidly flooding their comment sections with thousands of gambling promotions.
