Maybank Marathon 2023 attracts ever-more runners

P

ublicly listed Bank Maybank Indonesia has unveiled its preparations to organize the 2023 Maybank Marathon with a higher number of participants as the event has earned recognition as  an “Elite” road race, the only one in Indonesia.

The 12th Maybank Marathon is set to be held in Bali Safari & Marine Park, Gianyar, Bali on Aug. 27.

At least 13,600 participants have registered to take part in this year’s Maybank Marathon in the category of Marathon (42.195 km), Half Marathon (21.0975 km) and 10K.

This is an increase of 37 percent in the number of participants, compared with 2022. The rise in the number of participants is in direct proportion with people’s restored mobility following the pandemic, Maybank said in a statement in Jakarta on Aug. 22.

The 2023 Maybank Marathon is dominated by Indonesians, followed by runners from Malaysia, Japan, Singapore, Australia, the United Kingdom and other countries.

Apart from that, Maybank Marathon 2023 is also slated to feature a children’s sprint and wheelchair category as in previous years.

“We welcome the high enthusiasm shown by the participants in Maybank Marathon 2023. We are very impressed with the increase in the number of participants in every category this year. From another side, the increase in the number of participants also reflects the public’s increasingly high interest in athletics, particularly marathons and their awareness of a healthy lifestyle through running,” said Maybank Indonesia president director Taswin Zakaria.

Furthermore, Taswin affirmed that Maybank Marathon continually evolves, which has led to the race gaining the “Elite” label from World Athletics.

Runners in prime physical preparedness to achieve their personal best use the Maybank Marathon as a platform to realize their aspirations in running.

Maybank Marathon 2023 offers prizes worth Rp 2.7 billion for 86 winners, including record breakers.

This year’s Maybank Marathon will be a collaboration between Maybank Marathon and Bangsaen42 Chonburi Marathon from Thailand.

In the first year of collaboration, Maybank Indonesia will provide a free running slot for a total of 40 finishers of 2023 Maybank Marathon in the categories of Open Marathon, National Marathon and Master Marathon who succeed in recording the best times in the Bangsaen42 Chonburi Marathon in November.

Likewise, a total of 40 runners from the Bangsaen42 Chonburi Marathon will have an opportunity to take part in the Maybank Marathon 2024.

Maybank Marathon 2023 organizing committee team has carried out a series of preparatory activities ahead of the upcoming event, including inviting international elite runners as part of the requirements set by World Athletics regarding the holding of the “Elite” label.

According to the plan, Maybank Marathon will involve 12 international elite athletes. Apart from that, the organizing committee has also inspected all the crossing routes of Maybank Marathon 2023 and coordinated with the Bali provincial administration and security apparatus.

“The security and safety of all participants are our top priority in every Maybank Marathon we organize,” Maybank Marathon project director Widya Permana said.

“Since Maybank Marathon 2023 was announced in last January, the organizing committee has conducted a series of preparations, including checking the running routes to ensure that they are in a prime state and meet the standards and certification set by World Athletics and Maybank Marathon 2023 and other supporting aspects to make sure that the 2023 marathon can be run safely and conveniently,” he said.

Widya added that the implementation of the training program, Road to Maybank Marathon, was completed simultaneously in six cities: Jakarta, Medan, Bandung, Surabaya, Makassar and Denpasar.

Road to Maybank Marathon kicked off on May 14 and was participated in by more than 5,000 people from the running community in those cities.  The training covered short and long distance, strength training, running clinic, education related to nutrition intake and rest times, guided by coaches with expertise in sports recovery and mobility.

The training was part of the application of safety aspects, especially the physical preparedness of runners for the event.

This year’s Maybank Marathon will deploy 45 pacers skilled in handling first aid, emergency and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) treatment, 850 marshals and about 180 paramedics.

On top pf that, there will be 30 ambulance units, comprising ambulance cars, ambulance motorcycles and one emergency ambulance throughout the route.

The Maybank Marathon 2024 organizing committee will stick to “You Register, You Run” rule that obliges all participants to take the pack race according to the registered name and which cannot be substituted.

Similarly, the running slot is non-transferable and the participants can only run in the category that they have chosen.

The implementation of “You Register, You Run” rule aims to prioritize the safety and security of runners taking part in the race. This year the Maybank Marathon will utilize face recognition technology to underpin the implementation of “You Register, You Run” rule when collecting race packs.

Participants are advised to collect race packs at the Race Pack Collection (RPC) on Aug. 25-26 in Taman Bhagawan, Tanjung Benoa, Bali prior to Maybank Marathon 2023 being held on Aug. 27.

“The RPC will be held as an entertainment festival that will be enlivened by the appearance of Indonesia’s best-known performers, booths exhibiting Maybank Indonesia’s sustainability programs and booths displaying products from our sponsors. Apart from that, we have also launched promotional drives through Maybank Interactive Lounge and by utilizing Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard [QRIS] payment available at digital banking application M2U to introduce Maybank Indonesia banking services to participants,” Widya said.

Maybank Indonesia 2023 in Bali has received support from various parties including the Bali provincial administration, Bali Police, Bali Red Cross, Gianyar regency administration, Gianyar 1616 Military Command (Kodim) and the Indonesian Athletics Association (PASI).
