ies Adji Rachman, or Lies AR, cofounder and guitarist of Indonesia’s legendary all-female rock and roll group Dara Puspita, died at 77 on Sunday night in Mojokerto, East Java.
Lies, who had lived in the Netherlands since 1972, was accompanying her sister and fellow bandmate Titiek AR on her yearly trip to Indonesia when she reported feeling unwell. Lies was taken to the Gatoel Hospital in Mojokerto on Sept. 15 and died two days later.
“Her death was a result of heart failure, combined with other medical complications,” Lies’ daughters, Nina Tromp and Cynthia van Ijzendoorn-Tromp, stated on the Dara Puspita Facebook page.
“Our mother passed away in her beloved home country, Indonesia,” they added.
Lies will be buried in the Netherlands, where the rest of her family reside.
Born in Malang, East Java, on Jan. 30, 1946, Lies was one of 10 siblings in her family. She was one of the cofounders of the rock and roll quartet Dara Puspita. Initially, the group was called Nirma Puspita, hailing from Surabaya and managed by keroncong singer Mus Mulyadi, but its members left one by one.
The remaining members were Lies, along with her sister Titiek AR, Titiek Hamzah, Susy Nander and Ani Kusuma, who went to Jakarta and formed their own band, opting for the name Irama Puspita before eventually settling on Dara Puspita.
