Artists from across Southeast Asian nations and South Korea made friends and discovered new skills through Konnect Asean residency programs.
The lobby of the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta was transformed into a gallery of exquisite artworks on Oct. 16.
Among the pieces that adorned the space was a woodcut portrait of a young Asian girl, dressed in a modest black-and-white hanbok (traditional Korean dress). The sweet, innocent smile on her face, as she tucked a flower behind her ear, seemed to have captivated the attention of many onlookers in the building that afternoon.
The woodcut-on-medium density fiber (MDF), titled “Seizing Identity”, was one of the artworks produced by Southeast Asian and South Korean artists during recent Konnect ASEAN residencies in Jakarta and Thailand.
Konnect ASEAN is a cultural diplomacy program by the ASEAN Foundation in collaboration with the Republic of Korea.
Konnect ASEAN conducted two artist residency programs in July and August: the Konnect ASEAN Chiang Mai Print Residency Program in Thailand and the KONNECT Asean Artist Residency Program (KAARP) in Jakarta.
“These programs were designed to support young artists, develop their artistic skills and encourage cultural exchange between Southeast Asian nations and Korea,” Benjamin Hampe, project director of Konnect ASEAN, said during an interview.
Ten artists from Southeast Asian countries and four artists from South Korea participated in Konnect ASEAN Chiang Mai Print Residency Program in Thailand on July 1-29.
