T PLN (Persero) is ready to meet the need for green energy in the new national capital city (IKN) Nusantara with the construction of a solar power plant (PLTS) with a capacity of 50 megawatts. The laying of the first stone or ground breaking for the PLTS, a pioneer in generating new and renewable energy (NRE), was carried out directly by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, on Thursday.

President Jokowi said the construction of the PLTS showed the seriousness of the government, through PLN, in preparing a reliable electricity system based on environmentally friendly energy to meet electricity needs in IKN Nusantara. This is in line with the development of IKN as a green and environmentally friendly forest city.

"This is a pioneer of PLTS in IKN, its capacity can still be increased if needed," said Jokowi.

The President explained that the PLTS will reduce emissions by up to 104,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year. This PLTS is capable of producing around 93 gigawatt hours (GWh) of green energy per year, therefore it has answered how sufficient electricity needs in IKN will be met.

"The next question is whether there is electricity or not? Ready or not, [will there be] green energy? Where? The question was immediately answered this afternoon," said Jokowi.

Jokowi also requested that the electricity lines in IKN be embedded underground to ensure the aesthetics are maintained.

"I asked from the start that the cable should not be visible to the eye. All ground cables must be put into plots underground, [because how can] we build a good capital city like this [if] the cables are above?" said Jokowi.

PLN president director Darmawan Prasodjo confirmed PLN's commitment to preparing a reliable electricity system based on environmentally friendly supplies for IKN Nusantara.

"The construction of this PLTS is PLN's effort to support IKN Nusantara to become a green, futuristic and sustainable city, so that the electricity provided is based on an environmentally friendly supply," said Darmawan.

Darmawan added that the PLTS is established through the subholding of PLN Nusantara Power (NP), in collaboration with energy companies based in Singapore, Sembcorp Utilities Pte. Ltd., located in Sepaku, North Penajam Paser. It is targeted to be completed and operational by May 2024.

“We all-out support green electricity infrastructure to empower IKN as the best capital city, where everything will be based on state-of-the-art of technology, clean energy sources for IKN will be supported by the most up-to-date and beautiful artificial intelligence [AI]-based smart technology aesthetically, where the network is underground in accordance with the concept of green, smart and beautiful," added Darmawan.

Not only that, to support the need for green electricity in IKN Nusantara, PLN will also map and utilize the hydro potential around IKN for hydroelectric power plants (PLTA) with a capacity of up to 1,000 MW.

Therefore, the IKN Nusantara electricity system will be 100 percent based on NRE, which is also in accordance with PLN's commitment to achieve net-zero emissions (NZE) by 2060.

"PLN's commitment is to provide electricity that is not only reliable for the new capital city, but also clean. It is in line with the net-zero emissions target in order to utilize the potential of clean energy in Indonesia for the greatest prosperity of the people," concluded Darmawan.

On the same occasion, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was also signed between PLN and the National Capital Authority regarding the development of a Green National Capacity City through the development of an integrated electricity ecosystem for IKN.
