T

he director general of regional administration development at the Home Ministry, Dr. Safrizal ZA, led the Indonesian delegation at the 2023 Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC) in Barcelona, Spain. The event, which was held from Nov. 6 to 9, featured world congress activities and a smart city exhibition that was attended by more than 100 countries. From Indonesia, Safrizal led participants from the management of the Association of Indonesian Municipal Governments (APEKSI), the Health Ministry, regional heads and representatives of service heads from Sumedang regency, Taliabu Island regency, Makassar city and observers from Solok city, Semarang city and Probolinggo city.

"The Home Ministry has the responsibility to formulate policies and provide guidance in the development of smart cities throughout Indonesia. This is in line with the role of the director general of regional administration development as Indonesia's National Representative for the ASEAN Smart City Network," said Safrizal on the sidelines of the 2023 SCEWC congress and expo.

Safrizal, who was also appointed the ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN) chairman in 2023, in line with Indonesia's chairmanship of ASEAN, stated that Indonesia and all ASEAN member countries were committed to creating a smart city ecosystem and governance.

"For this reason, Indonesia's participation in the Smart City Expo World Congress 2023 in Barcelona, Spain, can especially expand digital technology investment opportunities for the development of smart cities in Indonesia, in direct proportion to strategically strengthening Indonesia's role in ASEAN," said Safrizal.

SCEWC is the biggest smart city forum and expo in the world and was initiated in 2011. It grew to become a world reference for promoting urban and regional development by bringing together stakeholders, ideas, networks, experiences and international business.

In 2023, SCEWC held a series of activities – Enabling Technologies, Energy & Environment, Tomorrow’s Mobility, Governance, Living & Inclusion, Economy, Infrastructure & Buildings and Safety & Security – with various sources from various countries, companies and investors.

"For the first time since the Indonesian delegation participated in this forum and expo in 2019, in 2023 the Indonesia Pavilion was successfully realized as a result of collaboration between the Home Ministry, Health Ministry, APEKSI, the Makassar city government, the Sumedang regency government and Asech," continued Safrizal.

Participating in events like this through the Indonesia Pavilion displays the country’s massive and unique potential in the field of digital technology and the smart city ecosystem.

"This is proven by the many visits to the Indonesia Pavilion […]. Through the facilitation of the Directorate General of Regional Administration Development, a mutual commitment, or letter of intent [LoI], has been achieved between the Sumedang regency administration, Wisercat Estonia and PT INTI to develop a smart city," concluded Safrizal.
