n Dubai on Dec. 6, 2023, during the COP28 event, state-owned electricity company PLN struck a business deal with the French hydrogen company, Hydrogen De France (HDF Energy). Both entities joined forces for the development of a hydrogen fuel cell hybrid power plant in Indonesia.

The collaboration between these companies was marked by the signing of a Joint Development Study Agreement (JDSA) by PLN CEO Darmawan Prasodjo and HDF Energy's Executive Director for Asia and President Pirector of HDF Energy Indonesia Mathieu Geze at the Indonesia Pavilion during COP28 on Dec. 3.

Darmawan stated that the JDSA agreement marks another step forward from a previous Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in April 2023. Once the production of green hydrogen in Indonesia is successful, PLN aims to advance hydrogen-based power plants with assistance from HDF Energy.

"Through this collaboration, as pioneers in hydrogen production, we are taking accelerated steps. By exploring futuristic technological innovations, Indonesia could become a major player in green hydrogen production," said Darmawan.

Beyond hydrogen production, through their collaboration with HDF Energy, PLN will develop the utilization of hydrogen via electrolysis processes to convert it into electricity to serve remote areas.

Moreover, both parties agreed to jointly conduct studies on developing baseload and non-intermittent power plants based on renewable energy sources, batteries and hydrogen. This includes the potential formation of a joint venture to develop renewable energy projects in the 3T regions (the frontier, outermost and remote regions), especially in the eastern part of Indonesia, with initial emphasis on Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara.

"As a result, the presence of renewable energy and hydrogen will not only support clean energy supply but also enable national electrification and become an integrated future business," added Darmawan.

Meanwhile, Mathieu Geze, the executive director for Asia and president director of HDF Energy Indonesia, mentioned that as a global leader in the hydrogen industry, their company is dedicated to developing large-scale hydrogen infrastructure. He believed that collaborating with PLN could expedite the implementation of hydrogen power plants, producing environmentally friendly and stable electricity, positioning Indonesia at the forefront of environmentally friendly hydrogen projects in the Asia-Pacific region.

"We are excited to strengthen our dedication toward a net zero emissions future with this JDSA. Through our collaboration with PLN, we aim to position Indonesia at the forefront of environmentally friendly hydrogen projects in the Asia-Pacific region. HDF Energy remains steadfast in our commitment to corporate responsibility, environmental preservation and efforts toward achieving a sustainable future," stated Mathieu Geze.
