ndonesian textile label Sejauh Mata Memandang (SMM) has collaborated with Greenpeace Indonesia and Plaza Indonesia for Kedai Kita, an interactive exhibition that draws attention to the effect of the climate crisis, from farm to table.

Held at Plaza Indonesia in Jakarta from Dec. 1 to 10, the 16th Sejauh Mata Memandang exhibition highlights how climate change has had a serious impact on crop yields in several regions in Indonesia, creating a high risk of harvesting and planting failures, from coffee in Banjarnegara, Central Java, rice in Gunung Kidul, Yogyakkarta, milkfish in Gresik, East Java, to nutmeg and cloves in Maluku.

Kedai Kita is part of Greenpeace Indonesia’s Berhenti Basa Basi Buat Bumi (Stop empty words for the Earth) series of events, which is the NGO’s response to encourage the government to take real action regarding the climate crisis. This activity was held to coincide with the annual United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, where world leaders gathered to discuss efforts to address the climate crisis.

Through Kedai Kita, Sejauh Mata Memandang and Greenpeace Indonesia provide a number of platforms to raise public awareness of the climate crisis, along with motivating the community to take concrete steps to involve themselves in positive change.

Chitra Subyakto, founder and creative director of Sejauh Mata Memandang, said with the label’s commitment to care for the Earth, SMM saw the importance of collaborating with various parties in contributing to resolving the climate crisis.

“This time we are collaborating with Greenpeace Indonesia with support from Plaza Indonesia in presenting the educational artwork Kedai Kita, with the hope that with the more parties involved, the more our voices will be heard, and collective awareness and real action will arise in saving the Earth," she said.

Greenpeace Indonesia Climate and Energy campaigner Adila Isfandiari said through Kedai Kita, the organization wanted to invite the public to understand the problem of the climate crisis, the impacts of which had reached dining tables across the globe.

“Apart from that, Kedai Kita is also part of a series of activities in Berhenti Basa Basi Buat Bumi. As the title suggests, we also want to invite the public to speak out and act on the climate and urge the government to stop paying lip service to fake promises and solutions, and immediately take real climate action."

There are three main areas that can be visited at Kedai Kita, including Kopi Kedai Kenangan, Warung Nasib Kita di Masa Depan (WarNas) and Warung Sejauh Mata Memandang. Designed by Felix Tjahyadi, the exhibition utilizes 90 percent reused materials such as wood panels from previous SMM activities as well as fabric from upcycled SMM production waste, giving a touch of design that is more environmentally responsible.

Kopi Tinggal Kenangan

A pun on the coffee franchise, Kopi Kenangan, this area highlights coffee’s vulnerability toward the climate crisis, where quality and quantity has gone down for farmers across Indonesia due to unpredictable extreme weather conditions. Visitors will be able to see for themselves how good coffee will become a mere memory due to the climate crisis.

Warung Nasib Kita di Masa Depan (WarNas)

Reminiscent of a traditional warung nasi (rice stall), the exhibition draws attention to Indonesia’s food security, in which daily necessities such as rice, fruits and vegetables, as well as fish are threatened by the climate crisis due to weather anomalies, pests, and diseases. Through WarNas, visitors will be able to see information on endangered food as well as stories from farmers who bear the brunt of the crisis.

Warung Sejauh Mata Memandang

Aside from the educational exhibition, SMM brought a pop-up shop designed to resemble a traditional warung (stall). Visitors can purchase the label’s products, ranging from clothing to unique pieces made from upcycled materials. The pop-up shop itself will operate until Jan. 11, 2024.
