Towards Indonesia Emas 2045 vision, Indonesia targets collaboration for OECD membership

T

o achieve the Indonesia Emas (Golden Indonesia) 2045 vision, economic transformation is one of the necessary steps that the government needs to take to enhance inclusive and sustainable national economic growth to move out of the middle-income trap and become a high-income country. The economic transformation encompasses various sectors, one of which is the integration of the global and national economies.

Considering this, efforts to strengthen international cooperation play a crucial role in providing a comprehensive road map to drive this economic transformation. Therefore, following its significant role in various international forums, Indonesia is currently prioritizing international economics by expressing its intention to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) through a letter from the Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto to the OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann.

As a follow-up to this intention, the OECD Council decided to initiate accession discussions with Indonesia on Feb. 20, 2024. This decision followed an assessment by OECD members based on the evidence-based Framework for the Consideration of Prospective Members. Furthermore, the OECD has also developed and discussed the road map for Indonesia's membership accession, which was agreed upon by the OECD Council on March 29, 2024. This process is relatively fast, taking only 7 months since the expression of intent in July 2023.

"Indonesia's designation as a candidate member of the OECD has gone through various processes, starting from Indonesia's activity as an OECD partner country to Indonesia’s good economic performance and global recognition through Indonesia's leadership in the G20 and ASEAN. Moreover, in the past four years, Indonesia's economy has proven to be resilient, strong, and has recovered despite the pandemic and various global economic challenges," expressed Office of the Coordinating Economic Minister spokesperson Haryo Limanseto.

Membership in the OECD could be a catalyst for domestic reform in Indonesia, with accelerated support for expertise access, research and analysis, sharing best practices from over 300 committees and working groups, peer reviews for policy improvement, access to current statistical data and funding support from several international institutions.

Additionally, these efforts can also boost investment attractiveness by increasing investor confidence because OECD member countries are considered capable of implementing high standards. Furthermore, Indonesia can also play a role in shaping global norms through OECD policy discussions, participating in the formation of OECD standards related to governance, and expanding global coverage.

Considering the various positive impacts that Indonesia could receive from joining the OECD, the government believes it is necessary to expedite Indonesia's membership accession to the organization. Therefore, through Presidential Decree (Keppres) No. 17/2024 concerning the National Team for Preparation and Acceleration of Indonesia's Membership in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), or the National OECD Team, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has appointed Minister Airlangga Hartarto to be the chairman of the team.

The Office of the Coordinating Economic Minister has also been actively involved in the process of Indonesia's OECD membership application and remains committed to overseeing this process. Furthermore, Minister Airlangga is scheduled to attend the OECD Ministerial Meeting in Paris on May 2-3, 2024. During this meeting, the official handover of the Roadmap for Membership Accession to Indonesia will take place. Following this stage, Indonesia will conduct a self-assessment of the compatibility of its policies and national standards with OECD policies and standards.

"Minister Airlangga has been entrusted by President Joko Widodo to lead the OECD, where the Office of the Coordinating Economic Minister has effectively overseen Indonesia's economy and structural reforms. Therefore, the Office of the Coordinating Economic Minister supports closer cooperation and collaboration from all parties for the successful acceleration of Indonesia's OECD membership," concluded spokesperson Haryo Limanseto.
