t the second Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Ministerial Meeting 2024, PT Pertamina (Persero) and its subholding units signed a collaboration with several companies from Japan, namely the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI), Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), MARUBENI, Japan Petroleum Exploration Company Limited (JAPEX) and Toyota Tsusho Indonesia. The cooperation is part of achieving the government's target of realizing net-zero emissions (NZE) by 2060.
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto explained that AZEC is a meeting forum involving government institutions, industry leaders and experts, for the purpose of reinforcing renewable energy and sustainable practices in all business sectors. “This AZEC forum focuses on sustainable development and pushing the NZE agenda. I would like to thank all the partners and stakeholders who have made this initiative possible. The decisions and expertise gathered [at AZEC] are invaluable in kick-starting this initiative together,” said Airlangga.
In agreement, Investment Minister Rosan Perkasa Roeslani added that the strategic partnership between Indonesia and Japan would become one of the main cornerstones to build the low carbon business ecosystem in Indonesia, a necessary component to meet the 2060 NZE target.
The signing of the cooperation strengthens previous agreements in various fields, including potential collaboration in the energy transition era, trade insurance and credit facilities, geothermal plants, measurement and qualification of methane emissions in the Donggi Matindok and JOB Tomori fields, CCUS-EOR CO2 injection in the Sukowati field (phase 2), and bioenergy production by applying carbon capture and storage technology in the South Sumatra area.
Present at the signing were Emma Sri Martini, Pertamina’s finance director; A. Salyadi Saputra, Pertamina’s director of strategy, portfolio and business development (SPPU); Takeda Sachiko of JICA; Kazuki Hondo of NEXI; Wataru Ikushima of MARUBENI; Tomomi Yamada of JAPEX; and Hiroyuki Mori of JOGMEC. In addition, Pertamina and subholding management included Oki Muraza, technology innovation senior VP; Chalid Said Salim, Pertamina Hulu Energi president director; Julfi Hadi, Pertamina Geothermal Energy president director; Muhamad Arifin, Pertamina EP Region 4 director; Andry, general manager of JOB Pertamina Medco E&P Tomori Sulawesi; and Zulfikar Akbar, general manager Zone 11 Pertamina EP.
Emma said that Pertamina was fully committed to supporting the government in realizing NZE by 2060 or sooner. Collaboration with international companies from Japan is expected to accelerate the achievement of this target.
“We have the same goal in reducing carbon emissions by exploring the potential and opportunities for cooperation to produce green and carbon-free energy,” said Emma on the sidelines of the signing. The signing by Pertamina and the Japanese companies was held at Grha Pertamina on Aug. 20, and officially announced to the public at the AZEC Ministerial Meeting 2024 on the following day.
Emma said the collaboration was Pertamina's real step in leading the energy transition in Indonesia. Various energy transition initiatives have been carried out by Pertamina, including increasing geothermal energy, developing green energy, commercializing hydrogen, developing biorefineries, implementing carbon capture and storage technology and developing an electric vehicle battery ecosystem.
“Pertamina will collaborate with national and global companies to support decarbonization and energy transition in Indonesia while creating new, more sustainable businesses,” he concluded.
Pertamina corporate communication VP Fadjar Djoko Santoso added that Pertamina's synergy with various Japanese companies showed a commitment to encouraging the acceleration of the government's NZE target. “Pertamina has various green energy and decarbonization programs. With cooperation, the ideals in developing green energy and decarbonization will run faster and more effectively to achieve the NZE target,” he said.
